entry #10 Thanksgiving Dinner and traditions

Image
I enjoy thanksgiving dinner, but I personally like the traditions about it more and knowing what the purpose of this holiday is. The typically Thanksgiving meal includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn, cranberry sauce, and finishing it off with some pumpkin pie; making it the most ok dinner and is overrated in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong I do enjoy the meal, but to say that it is the best meal of the year is just to much. If it was really that great of a meal, why don’t people make it more then just one day out of the year. Most people only a make a turkey one day out of the year, even on Christmas or Easter when we gather with friends and family for a big meal. Then when you finish your plate, you are handed a slice of pumpkin pie, which in my opinion can only be eaten with a mountain of whip cream on top. At the end of the day the meal is good but to me it isn’t the best meal I eat the whole year. My personal favorite things about Thanksgivin...

Entry #9 the fight over corn

Image
I found this political cartoon about the food industry and the fight over corn because all the possibilities and uses for corn. The first thing you probably noticed was the massive corn stalk with several hands grabbing onto it. Then you will probably notice the names on the people’s arms showing the several uses of corn and what can be made into or used for. The people are also wearing different types of clothes to symbolize more what industry they are in, the ethanol one is wearing a suit to show wealth and the amount of money made in the ethanol market, the farmers are all wearing flannels a typical farmers outfit, and the food producer is also wearing a suit for his industry of processed food. The hands on the stalk also go down in size in order of what corn is mainly used for, 40% goes to ethanol, 36% goes to the farmers, and the rest gets exported to the food manufacturers. This ad shows the amount of uses for corn, but it also shows who really makes the money with corn a...

Entry #8 The Gaming Console Market

Image
One of the items that are on top of many kids wish list this year for the holidays are the new editions of the Xbox One Series X and the PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, many of these kids probably won’t be getting one this year due to the microchip shortage, and the resell market for these gaming consoles has also surged due to this. These new generations for these consoles have been out for a little over year to this point and now and are still selling out instantly every time they release some, and the only people getting them are the resellers who use automatic software that can buy multiple consoles all at one time. These people then are able to turn around and sell them for about $800 each to the people who actually want to play and enjoy these new gaming consoles. Why doesn’t Sony or Microsoft just release more consoles then? Due to the Covid-19 pandemic there was a massive microchip shortage that is a necessity for these consoles, causing for less of them to be manufactured, b...

Entry #7 Fresh

Image
There are many controversial topics going on right now. Some are more important than others but one that isn’t getting the national attention that it should is the industrialized food industry here in America. The documentary “Fresh” tries to show their viewers exactly what is happening in this industry right now and how little the public people really know about it. The tone throughout is mostly serious and sometimes hopeful when talking about potential solutions to this major issue. They interview with several local small farmers and talk about what they do differently at their farms compared to these massive factory farms when it comes to caring for animals, rotating crops, and not using pesticides on the produce. Some of the farmers talk about how much harder it is nowadays to compete with these massive operations and how some of them are just struggling to make it by while their competition is blowing right by them, even with a lower quality product. They also state facts about ...

EC entry Food Inc.

Image
The documentary “Food Inc” directed by Robert Kenner shows just how much the food world has changed in such little time and the major impacts that it has had already. Food Inc goes in depth just what really is going on in this industry that the consumer doesn’t know about, and what even the government is trying to cover up. They use several jaw dropping facts and several horrifying images and videos to show the animal abuse in these places. The documentary talks to famous authors and critics about the industrialized food industry, small farmers, and other people who have been affected by these corporations. The opening starts with an open corn field, and a rancher riding his horse through the beautiful open country and the narrator opens up by saying “the way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than the previous 10,000, but the image that is used to sell food is still the same” and cuts to a huge factory where they are processing and packaging whole chickens to send to the m...

entry #6 sports card market

Image
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone says they are investing in something? Some might say stocks, crypto currency, real estate, or even maybe themselves; not many people think of sports cards, but people are starting to shift their attention to the rise and popularity of the sports card market and the potential upside it offers.  Sports cards have been produced since the mid 1880’s and continued to grow in popularity through the years and peaked in the mid-1990’s when it started to go downhill a little after they supply was too high for the demand. Recently in 2020 the hobby started to gain more traction and is still seeing growth. There are many factors that lead up to the resurgence of the sports card market including Covid-19 with everyone locked in their homes during the quarantine, the Last Dance documentary, and the kid’s that previously collected cards in the 80’s and 90’s now have their own kids and most importantly more income to spend on this previous ho...

Entry #5 Mayhem

Image
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CO-_cmXiBL4    I decided to pick this Allstate Mayhem commercial starring Dean Winters, as I personally can relate to this as my dad always tailgates other people when he drives. This commercial ad was obviously created so viewers would want to use Allstate Insurance, but they also want their viewers to come to   so they don’t have to worry about situations like the one in the ad. This ad may seem to be a super far stretched and made for a short little bit of humor during a commercial break but if you think about it how often do you have someone riding your rear end and you are just hoping and praying that they don’t hit you, I know I have had that more than once before. The ad's target audience is mainly adults as they are the ones who would be needing their insurance packages. The ad also uses a play on words with tailgating meaning riding on someone else’s rear end when driving, and also the party that takes place before a football game....

entry #4 Football in the Desert

Image
I am writing this before the Cardinals vs Browns game, the Cardinals are currently 5-0 the best start they have ever had in a season since moving to Arizona. It has been fun so far watching this team this season as they hope to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Their quarter back Kyler Murray has had a MVP start to the season with over 1500 passing yards and 10 touchdowns. Their defense this year has also been really good this year ranked fourth in the league. Many people believe this can be attributed to many different things from their offseason plays they made acquiring defensive end JJ Watt, wide receiver AJ green, and just recently trading for tight end Zach Ertz. Another factor is the experience Kyler Murray has been able to gain through three years of playing in the NFL.   This week’s weeks game will be interesting however since both the head coach and a couple of the assistant coaches tested positive for Covid-19 making them ineligible to be at the ...

Entry #3 the M!nt

Image
I had just finished eating Taco Bell with my friends, and the combination of the bean burrito, the Mtn Dew Baja Blast and the tacos I had, were not feeling so hot in both my stomach and my mouth as we continued on into our night. I needed some kind of pick me up to feel a little better. When I took the small little red tin out of my pocket, I could hear the other ones shaking and sliding around inside. I popped open the lid to see the snow like powder going everywhere, I moved away the wax paper to reveal what looks like to be a hundred of these small little white pills in the tin. I picked the lucky winner and popped it into my mouth I immediately felt like I was on a snow-covered mountain getting blasted by this cold chilling wind that felt like it would never stop, my taste buds continue to fight and break down this brutal winter freeze that I put into my mouth. The whole experience lasted maybe five minutes, but this is where it quickly became my least favorite part was when ...

Entry #2 The future of Cryptocurrency

Image
The future and potential of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency alike is at an all time high, but there could be some issues that could rise sooner than later.  I'll start with the pros, cryptocurrency has exploded in value the in about the last year and is expected grow exponentially as more people and other institutions get in on the action. From 2020 to 2021 the global market cap of cryptocurrency grew from 758 billion US dollars to 2 trillion US dollars an increase over 160%. Many top banks are also beginning to buy in as well including Morgan Stanley, Charles Schwab, Citigroup, and JPMorgan. Another benefit that cryptocurrency offers is the speed, security, limited supply, and it cuts out middleman. Bitcoin and other crypto can transfer faster to another account faster than any other bank or wire transfer service. Offers more security and protection as it relies on a virtual code that only the recipient of the coin has, no passwords or usernames that easily can be hacked and stol...
